A Letter To Robert Gidel Jr.

March 3, 2003

Dear Bob Gidel:

The events of September 11, 2001 changed the history of America and the World forever.  Immediately, many federal, state, and local agencies as well as scores of volunteers responded by assisting in any possible way in the rescue, recovery and cleanup efforts.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's response to these events was heroic and demonstrated our inner drive to save and protect America.

Your dedication and contribution made to the World Trade Center Recovery Project is a proud example of this drive.  This is clearly illustrated when, after more than 3.7 million work hours, not another life was lost.  This is a remarkable achievement and demonstrates the professionalism and resolve of people such as yourself who make up the OSHA Family.

Please accept the enclosed memento as a token of our appreciation for your assistance.  Also know that you have our heartfelt gratitude and the thanks of a grateful nation for all you did to help the country recover and recommit itself to the principles that keep America strong and proud.  Our hope and challenge is to carry this sense of purpose and teamwork forward as we continue to strategically reduce and eliminate workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths.  I know you share our hopes and dreams for an America where everyone's safety and health is valued and cherished.

Once again, Thanks!

John L. Henshaw, Assistant Secretary of Labor - OSHA

Patricia K. Clark, Regional Administrator, Region 2 New York
